The producer had the belief based on his research that he didnt think that the show would make money if the cast were predominantly black. Whether or not that is true can be debated. If the same producer made the exact same statement about white people you would not call him racist. You would call him brave.

If an employment agency gets 10% on top of their temp they find a job for, it should be that way with writers. After all, without the script, NO ONE gets paid.

@@Scriptfella Thanks. I'm a novelist (not a screenwriter) and I received some interest in my new book, "The Eighth Sacrament," from someone claiming to be a producer. I'm smart enough to not trust everyone claiming to be connected, but the idea of compensation based on box office dollars has been on my mind all week. Thanks for putting this up. :)

Thank you for the masterclass video Dominic. As always, very informative and very helpful. It's so important to remind ourselves that we're writing for a reader. Someone who's probably just slogged through a whole bunch of screenplays and has a stack more to get through. If we're going to drop a screenplay on their desk, it should be a break from the monotony. It needs to be an entertaining read. It shouldn't feel like work. It has to be a page turner. Something that grabs them at fade in and doesn't let them go until fade out. Something they enjoy so much that they want to share with others.

Sometimes when I'm writing, it helps to just think about the technical parts first before the artistic vision come into play. So my process will start with just getting the bones on the page. Then I edit with my "filmmaker cap" on wherein I try to think about the scene in a way a producer or director would be thinking about *how* to make it happen. It might mean adding a lot of unnecessary details like camera angles and being specific like "low key lighting, shadows obscuring face" during my first pass. But I'll go back and then cut the fluff and smooth the rough edges until it flows more artistically than being a hard, technical guide. I like to think a script helps a director see the movie in their head, as they'll have their own ideas for *how* to bring it to life on the screen that might be different than my own (like I may be giving a lot of shadowed imagery, but our perceptions of what that final product looks like could be different even if it gives the same "vibe" as we're both telling stories in our own, different mediums). Giving them an exact how-to is like reading an Ikea furniture build manual without any pictures. The process of a writer and an artist, in this context with lighting, are very similar. One of the hardest things for me during my early journey as a writer was mistakingly believing I had to do the lighting before I'd even finished my sketch. Just like when you're drawing, you need to do the sketch, the line art, the flats, the shading, the lighting, the highlights- it's all a layered process. While it doesn't have to be totally linear, it does help to build things up. Otherwise, I got overwhelmed that my "sketch" didn't look like the final painting, which was unfair to me. Trusting the artistic process as a writer helped me grow. This video's core also applies to sound and colors too! There are a lot of aspects to cinematic design that screenwriters should be keeping in mind. :) It always helps to see visual and scripted examples the way you do in your videos. I'm a visual person both with words on a page and seeing the picture, so that juxtaposition is absolutely perfect for learning! While anyone can go online and do their own research to understand cinematic lighting and then learn how to apply it to their script, courses like yours condense all that info into one place, make it digestible, and give the added bonus of that learning tool I mentioned before. YT is a great way to advertise those classes and giving this snip-it was perfect for knowing what to expect in the course. Fantastic work, as always! Thanks a ton! :D

The knife cuts both ways. Hollywood, and Australia, and other Western countries are full of agenda driven propagandist material pushing identity politics, gender, LGBTQ, and race swapping. The audience is absolutely fed up with it. Activist pushing the 'woke', agenda have plagued current film and television output and the quality of current Hollywood films is appalling as a result. The bottom line has been affected badly, too. I was accidentally CC'd in on an internal email for an acting agency I'd applied to and they said my acting was top shelf but I was "Too white".
